Helen R. (Mahovlich) Goodman, 95, formerly of Freeport and Sarver, PA, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025, surrounded by her family at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot, PA.
Helen was born on August 20, 1930, in St. Mary’s, PA to the late George and Rosa (Balaban) Mahovlich.
She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1948. On October 11, 1952, Helen married Harry W. Goodman, and the couple celebrated 56 years of marriage in 2008.
Helen was a member of St. Mary Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Freeport, where she served in the Homebound Ministries. She was active in both her church and her community. After working as a teacher’s aide in the Freeport Area school district, she retired in 1992.
A creative spirit, Helen enjoyed spending time working on crafts, especially making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls for her grandchildren and friends. The Freeport Library inherited her collection. Helen also enjoyed recycling greeting cards.
Helen will be remembered for her dedication to her family and her church. She is preceded in death by her parents mentioned above, beloved husband Harry W. “Bill” Goodman, brothers George, Stephan, Ivan, Frank, and Joe Mahovlich, and sisters Barbara Reed, Kathryn Zoschg, Ann Paropacic, and Margaret Shoup.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Michael (Mimi) Goodman of DuBois, PA, Douglas (Dixie) Goodman of Meadville, PA, Joseph (Barbara) Goodman of Freeport, PA, Susan (David Aul) Dawson of Natrona Heights, PA, and Ann (Joseph) Graceffo of Leland, NC. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Friends and family will be welcomed from Noon until 5:00 pm on Sunday, December 28th. at DENNIS J. DAUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 324 Fourth Street, Freeport. (724-295-3100) where a parting prayer service will be held at 9:30 am on Monday, December 29th. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 am at the St. Mary, Mother of God, Roman Catholic Church, Freeport. Reverend Christopher Pujol will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary Cemetery, Freeport.
Helen’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Concordia, Oertel Hall, for their loving and attentive care of Helen over the past 13 years. They are the best!
